Helping Senior Drivers through the NSW Licencing Process
Modified Licence for Senior Drivers in NSW
Senior drivers aged 85 or above who remain safe and capable on the road may choose to apply for a modified licence if full-access driving no longer feels suitable. This may include drivers who prefer shorter local trips, reduced traffic exposure or daytime driving only.
To explore this option, you may visit a Service NSW centre and discuss your needs with a centre manager, who will consider your circumstances and driving confidence. In many situations, a practical driving test is not required when the decision is based on lifestyle preference rather than safety concerns.
A modified licence places geographic limits around where you are permitted to drive. These limits are based on a set radius from your residence. The approved travel radius may include:
• Five (5) kilometres
• Ten (10) kilometres
• Fifteen (15) kilometres
• Larger distances in rural or remote communities if required for essential travel
These limits allow senior drivers to continue driving for shopping, medical appointments, family needs and community activities while reducing higher-risk driving exposure.
If your doctor recommends this option based on health or safety considerations, a senior driving assessment may be required. Older Driver Assessments delivers this service using accredited Transport for NSW older driver assessors.
