Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment

Do you have a disability or medical condition that may impact your driving?
OT driving assessments are for drivers who have received notification from Transport for NSW due to a disability or medical condition and require an assessment of their functional ability to drive safely.
An Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment is a specialised assessment designed to evaluate a driver’s functional ability to drive safely when a medical condition, disability, or age related change may affect driving performance. An Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment, often referred to as an OT driving assessment, focuses specifically on driving related skills rather than general therapy needs. These assessments fare conducted in line with the standards and reporting requirements set by Transport for NSW.
An OT driving assessment may be required for drivers with neurological conditions, cognitive changes, physical limitations, sensory impairment, or other medical conditions that could impact safe driving. These assessments are commonly requested following a medical review, licence review, or recommendation from a treating health professional. There is a difference between an older driver assessor and a driver trained occupational therapist.
An Occupational Therapy Driving Assessments process usually include an off road functional assessment and an on road driving component, followed by a comprehensive report. This report is provided to the driver, their GP, and Transport for NSW, and is used to support an informed and evidence based licence decision.
Older Driver Assessments helps connect drivers with qualified occupational therapist driving assessors across NSW when one is required by a GP or requested by Transport for NSW.
Rather than requiring individuals to locate an assessor independently, Older Driver Assessments has provided contact details below for further information or assistance.

DOCTOR REFERRAL
If you have a medical condition that may impact your ability to drive safely, speak with your GP about arranging a Fitness to Drive Assessment. If your GP determines that your condition could affect your functional driving capacity, they may recommend and refer you for an OT driving assessment.

OFF-ROAD ASSESSMENT
An off road assessment, completed at home or in a clinic, is used to evaluate functional abilities for driving, including cognition, perception, motor skills, sensory processing and driving behaviour.

ON-ROAD ASSESSMENT
The on road assessment involves a one hour drive with an occupational therapist and driving instructor in a dual control vehicle, to determine how your medical condition and off road findings affect your ability to drive safely.

OT DRIVING ASSESSMENT OUTCOME REPORT
Following the off road and on road assessments, a comprehensive report is provided to you, your GP and Transport for NSW, outlining your functional capacity and how your medical condition affects driving, which is then used by Transport for NSW to make the final licence determination.
