The assessment is designed to observe safe driving in the type of environment the driver normally uses.

Local driving in and around Beecroft typically involves Beecroft Road as the main road through the suburb, Hannah Street through the village shopping area, Copeland Road through residential areas, routes to Macquarie University Hospital, and school zones near Cheltenham Girls High School and Arden Anglican School. Our fail items page explains what the assessor observes throughout the drive.

What Is Assessed During a Senior Driving Test in Beecroft?

The assessment focuses on practical driving skills used every day on NSW roads. The assessor observes how the driver responds to normal traffic situations, manages the vehicle and makes decisions in a real driving environment. The aim is not to catch drivers out. It is to observe everyday driving in a realistic setting.

There are eight official fail items set by Transport for NSW. If any one of these occurs during the drive, you will not pass regardless of your overall performance.

1
Disobeying traffic signs, signals or road markings
2
Failing to give way when necessary
3
Colliding with a vehicle, pedestrian or object
4
Performing an illegal act or manoeuvre
5
Exceeding the speed limit
6
Action requiring testing officer intervention
7
Causing a dangerous situation
8
Failing to maintain proper control of the vehicle

What Driving Situations Will the Route Include?

Transport for NSW requires the assessment route to cover a specific range of driving environments and traffic situations.

Road Environments

The route must include quiet residential streets or lower traffic roads, as well as arterial roads with medium to heavy traffic. This may include commercial centres, major roads and areas with higher pedestrian activity.

Traffic and Intersection Situations

The route must include a shopping or commercial precinct, a left turn onto a priority road, a right turn onto a priority road or straight across a priority road, and a right turn from a priority road. You will be required to turn against oncoming traffic and use intersections controlled by stop signs.

How the Assessor Provides Directions

Your assessor will provide you with clear, simple directions given in advance, such as "Leave the kerb, and at the next street turn left" or "At the next street, turn right."

Older Driver Assessments were very helpful in navigating the complex requirements from NSW Services, helping us to understand what was required and what our options were. My MIL was extremely nervous about having to do an assessment, however the sent a really lovely assessor who immediately put her at ease and the assessment went well. I would definitely use ODA again.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express myself over my aged driving test, Simply, I was very concerned not for my ability but just in case I didn’t pass because I’m the primary caregiver of my wife who is mentally ill. However, my anxiety was soon diminished due to the very polite attitude of the testing examiner, who carefully explained what I had to do, incidentally, I had a pre session driving lesson before the test. She made me feel comfortable and I felt confident in my test. Thank you Regards Peter.

The Examiner, Chris Trutwein, a former police officer, was courteous and respectful throughout the 45 minute test. He had even phoned me the previous day to introduce himself and to summarise the testing procedure. These kind acts put me at ease. The actual driving test was conducted on a busy Saturday around mid-day and included suburban and CBD situations with multiple roundabouts, sets of traffic lights, multi lanes of merging traffic and assorted traffic signs as well as a range of speed restrictions. In my 85 years I've undertaken driving tests (including the Police Defensive Driving course) in various countries including Australia, the UK and USA for both motor vehicle and motor cycle, and this evaluation was the most comprehensive I've experienced. I now have the confidence to continue driving, and the determination to uphold my 68 year unblemished safe driving record.
